Chapter Thirty-One

Jasmine

I awoke to find daylight pouring through a gap in the blinds. Ed slept on beside me, a half-smile on his face. He looked younger in sleep—almost boyish. If I wasn’t bursting for a pee, I’d have stayed where I was, but nature called. I was quiet in the bathroom, and he was still sleeping when I came back. What time was it? Eight-thirty. That would explain why I was starving, and also desperate for coffee.

How much sleep did we get? Not as much as I’d like, but it was worth it. If Ed didn’t have plans for this morning, we could play some more in bed. If he wanted that.

He was clear on his rules—one night only. On that basis I should be getting dressed and ready to leave, but I was going to wait. When Ed was awake, I’d ask him if he wanted me to stay longer. I was all about clear communication.

There were a couple of coffee plungers in the kitchen cupboard with the teabags. I’d make us a pot, and wake him up, and then take it from there.

I trotted downstairs wearing Ed’s cast-off shirt again—just in case Joyce was wielding her vacuum cleaner—but there was no sign of her. Our cups were still in the kitchen sink. That was odd, there were four in total. Whatever. Ed must have used fresh cups when it was his turn to make the tea.

I found the coffee pot, filled the kettle, and then searched for coffee grains. Like with the teabags, there were several to choose from. Havana Five Star blend was an easy choice. Locally roasted and ground, this blend had a rich, dark flavour, and was perfect for a wake-up brew. My mum always had a bag in her larder.

If I could find a tray, I’d take the coffee pot upstairs, complete with sugar and milk. Where would he keep a tray?

The kitchen was well stocked with storage space. I hunted methodically, starting at the bottom. No joy. I was hunting through the highest cupboards, and standing on tippy-toe, when soft footsteps sounded behind me. Ed was awake.

Bingo. I found a set of stacked trays. Perfect timing. “Morning,” I said without looking. “I’ve made coffee, and I was just trying to grab a tray to bring it up. Would you get this one for me, please?”

He cleared his throat. “You’re not Joyce, unless she had a major upgrade?”

The fuck? I looked over my shoulder.

A stranger stood in Ed’s kitchen. Tall, and dishevelled, he looked as though he’d slept in the gutter.

Oh my God. My heart threatened to leap out of my chest. I tugged at the nearest tray and yanked it free, then spun around and held it in front of me as a shield.

Who the fuck was he? Why was he in Ed’s kitchen? And was he looking at my bare ass? I was beyond embarrassed.

I tugged the shirt down as far as it would go. “Who are you and what are you doing in here?” My voice came out as a squeak.
